Environmental Impact of AI – Carbon Footprint, Systems, Artificial Intelligence

What is the environmental impact of AI? In this engaging Environmental Science activity, students investigate the hidden resources behind artificial intelligence, including electricity, water, carbon emissions, data centers, and physical hardware.

Students analyze real-world data, complete calculations, compare the impacts of different AI uses, and consider an important question:

When is using AI worth its environmental cost?

Description:

What is the environmental impact of AI? In this engaging Environmental Science activity, students investigate the hidden resources behind artificial intelligence, including electricity, water, carbon emissions, data centers, and physical hardware.

Students analyze real-world data, complete calculations, compare the impacts of different AI uses, and consider an important question:

When is using AI worth its environmental cost?

The investigation builds to a 100 AI Tokens Challenge, where students must decide which AI applications deserve limited resources. Then their budget suddenly drops to 60 tokens, forcing them to reconsider their choices, prioritize what matters most, and defend their decisions with evidence.

Students Will Explore:

  • Data-center electricity demand and projected growth
  • Why different AI tasks require different amounts of computing
  • How electricity sources affect carbon emissions
  • Data-center cooling and water use
  • Hardware, raw materials, recycling, and e-waste
  • Environmental uses of AI, including wildfire detection, flood forecasting, wildlife monitoring, and grid efficiency
  • The trade-offs involved in deciding when AI is worth using

Students finish by revisiting their original opinions, creating Three Rules for Sustainable AI, and responding to the final question: AI is worth its environmental cost when…

What’s Included:

  • Complete student investigation
  • Real-world data and calculations
  • 100 → 60 AI Tokens Challenge
  • Student reflection + final sustainability challenge
  • Comprehensive teacher guide
  • Answer key + sample responses
  • NGSS connections
  • Differentiation + extension ideas
  • Sources + further reading

Why You’ll Love This Activity

AI is something students already know about and probably already use, which makes it an easy topic to get them talking.

This activity takes that interest and turns it into meaningful environmental science, data analysis, systems thinking, and evidence-based decision making.

Students aren’t told what to think about AI. They’re given the evidence and asked to decide for themselves.

Please note: AI Token values are fictional and are used only to create a limited-resource challenge. They do not represent the actual environmental cost of each AI application.
