This hands-on Rock Identification Lab allows students to actively explore and differentiate igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Students will use actual rock samples and identification techniques to analyze textures, mineral compositions, and structural features, enhancing their understanding of geological processes and formations.

Get your students thinking and working like real geologists with this hands-on Rock Identification Lab! In this activity, students rotate through a set of 9 rock samples and use careful observation to classify each one as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic. They analyze texture, grain size, color, crystal structure, and key identifying features, then use evidence-based reasoning to justify their identifications and connect each sample back to rock-forming processes.
Instead of memorizing rock types, students actually do the work of geologists by examining physical samples, recording observations, and applying Earth Science Reference Tables (ESRT) skills to identify each rock. This lab naturally builds critical thinking as students move from “what do I see?” to “what does this tell me about how the rock formed?”
Perfect for introducing or reinforcing the rock cycle, this activity helps students connect visible rock features to Earth’s processes like cooling magma, sediment deposition, compaction, cementation, heat, and pressure.

What busy teachers like you have said:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sharon M. says, “Great resource, standards aligned and was perfect for my homeschooled daughter’s lab she needed to complete.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Janice M. says, “This actually worked out really well, because all the samples that are listed here are in my rock collections and I could not find the original lab worksheets that came with the samples. Now I can use my samples each year!”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Camryn S. says, “My students loved this rock identification lab! Such a great resource to use with a rock id kit.”
