This resource includes two presentations:

• Earthquakes Presentation (10 slides) focuses on the causes and effects of earthquakes.
• Earthquakes P & S Waves Presentation (47 slides) focuses on how we determine the location of an earthquake’s epicenter, the Mercalli and Richter scale, and earthquake safety.

Students investigate the causes and effects of earthquakes, how to determine the location of an earthquake’s epicenter and how seismic waves are useful tools for scientists exploring the Earth’s interior. Concepts covered include earthquakes, stress vs. strain, faults, focus, epicenter, seismic waves (primary vs. secondary waves), seismology, seismograph/grams, how to use the P-S wave chart, triangulation, etc.

The presentations are estimated to take approximately 30 minutes of class time. Guided notes are included for students to fill in while listening to and following along with the presentations.
