Hidden Energy Costs Project

$3.00

Description

When we think of energy use, we usually think of the energy used in our home, our automobile, or at work. We seldom stop to think of the energy used to make, transport, sell, and dispose of everyday objects, such as light bulbs, pencils, food and soap.

This project affords students an opportunity to research all of the steps required to create a common good, including the materials and energy used throughout the manufacturing process. Students are tasked with presenting the steps of production, the environmental impact, and a re-engineering plan. The goal of this project is for students to strategize how the environmental impact of production of an item could be reduced without sacrificing appeal or performance of the item.

A detailed rubric is included, which sets clear expectations for the students and eases the grading process for teachers.
